Anagrams and Crosswords. Life is a puzzle

The second ancestor of the acrostic puzzle, the anagram, additionally arose in antiquity. The term
comes from the Greek roots “ana”, “back or reversed” and grammar, “letter” (or grammos,
“line”). A good anagram is a rearrangement of the letters in a word or phrase to generate a new
word or phrase. For example, “astronomers” can be rearranged to form “moon starrers” or
“no more stars.”
A Greek writer named “Lycophron”, who also lived throughout the fourth century prior to Christ,
might have started the earliest surviving anagrams. His poem “Alexandra: in in which
Cassandra prophesied the fall of Troy, included flattering anagrams on the names of the
reigning Egyptian king and queen.
Soothsayers, oracles, and prophets used anagrams as one supply for theif advice. They
strained to piece together the letters in names, attempting to produce apt phrases. Both supporters of
Martin Luther and all those resisting his doctrines constructed anagrams on his name in German
and in Latin to help to make their points. Martin Luther became “lehrt in Armut” (he teaches in
poverty). Martinus Luterus grew to become both vir multa struens (the man who became both “vir multa struens” (the man who builds up much) and “ter matris vulnus” (He wounded the mother (church] three times). In 1605 Pompeu Salvi published in Genoa a number of five hundred anagrams on the Ave Maria.
In the 1800s the phrase “Govern, clever lad” priviledged Grover Cleveland. More
recently, the descriptive phrase “now has a wide, ever-delighted grin” surfaced through the
letters in “General Dwight David Eisenhower.”
The anagram continues to be a popular entertainment, much much more so compared to the acrostic. This
is unquestionably because much more skill is needed to create an anagram, especially an appropriate one.
Certainly, much of the importance credited to the Sator Square came from the numerous
anagrams composed from its letters. In 1925, for case in point, a Reverend Hi observed that
SATOR OPERA TENET was an anagram of PATER NOSTER A ET O. A 10 was obtained
to mean “Alpha and Omega,” or, “the Beginning and the End” (referring a the Greek
Alphabet and Revelation 1 :8).
Anagrams execute a sizeable section in the clues for cryptic crossword puzzles and amusing
puzzles such as Puns and Anagrams. Oftentimes some remarkable ones crop up in
conventional usa crossword puzzles, and will both today and in the future. ”Tut” of the National usa today crossword Puzzlers’ League released “It’s now seen live” from TELEVISION NEWS, and WIll Shortz brought It to prominence in a nationally
published usa crossword.
